A week ago, the MESSENGER spacecraft transmitted to here the first high-resolution image of Mercury by a spacecraft in over 30 years, since the three Mercury flybys of Mariner 10 in 1974 and 1975.
.
MESSENGER’s Wide Angle Camera (WAC), part of the Mercury Dual Imaging System (MDIS), is equipped with 11 narrow-band color filters, in contrast to the two visible-light filters and one ultraviolet filter that were on Mariner 10’s vidicon camera.
.
By combining images taken through different filters in the visible and infrared, the MESSENGER data allow Mercury to be seen in a variety of high-resolution color views not previously possible.
.
The navigation team is lead by KinetX, Inc. of Tempe, AZ. KinetX is the first private company to be responsible for navigation of a NASA deep space mission.

Harks to me of the Dutch East Indies ventures - discover, take control, plunder . But how many governments have that sorta cash? Well if they weren’t too busy fighting stoopid wars…”

humans - us & them
i’ve been sitting on this for a coupla days now, so please bear with me .
.
i don’t know who reads this stuff i’m putting out here …
. . .
i’ve been trying to (discretely) place (relevant) hotlinks onto the web - here & there - you know, as you do …
trying to raise the profile of the site a bit - trying to get some people reading it, trying to get a comment outa someone, anyone .
.
on the 20th January on the ‘Wikipedia fails’ post , i get a comment .

.
i have no idea who ‘cheesecake’ is . i have no idea why they are so angry with my opinion . to me they are a faceless, asexual, cloud of hate that has been spat my way .
.
i’d like to believe we live on a planet where we can trust, listen, understand, care, love each other . i’m obviously miles out there - we all know aggression happens all around us - thankfully its usually via a video feed . but when it does happen to you, wow - you gotta ask why .
.
maybe this is where the fate / influence equation breaks down .
maybe us humans are always destined to hold onto our animal agro - a method of survival .
.
but this isn’t survival, this is self-destruction .
.
bah, who knows - i sure don’t .

Wikipedia fails .
the Wikipedia main page has a section on ‘In The News’ .
.
I T N contains recent events that have happened - plane crashes - discoveries - deaths .
.
Bobby Fischer - the Chess player - died recently and was included on the list … a few days ago Sir Ed was not .
.
wikipedia is by the people, for the people - including people.. here in NZ - people in Nepal - people you, people me .
.
my point being is why Sir Ed - a hero to millions - can be deemed un-includable while Mr. Fischer is includable .
.
No offence to Mr. Fischer’s memory - i’m sure he was a brilliant man who truely believed in what he felt inside .
.
for me personally ? I feel a bit let down that Ed, the great great man, has no ‘notability’ in such a historic record .
.
There are certain criteria that obituaries should meet to make ITN . Sir Ed’s failure was the lack of an ‘unexpected death’ - while Mr. Fischer - at the young age of 64 - met these .
.
.
.
.
meanwhile, my solace lies in the fact that Sir Ed, the person who ‘knocked the bastard off’, would not have given a shit .

2 commentsfate & influence
your life is a ratio between fate & influence … i discovered this while fishing over the break .
.
…… . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . .
.
some things belong in the book bag of entropy - the undeterminable, the unforseen, like lotto numbers, like cars crossing centre lines into your path
.
…. .. . . . . . . .
.
also in there are the books we write - the determinable, the decisions we make, the numbers we pick, the people we hurt
.
…. . . . . . .. . . .
.
fate & influence
there must be a ratio equation in there somewhere. .. . . . .

5r - ‘ only those who have dared to Lego can dare to reenter ‘
the Golden Globes were a pile of poo this period ‘pparently - i don’t see why … . . the thought of another ceremony with some over-paid over-hyped celebrities stroking each others thighs doesn’t really get me going… .. . .. . . but never fear - the randomstupid.com (in association with Rust - Rust : the family band) Lego awards are here ! yay !

. 1919 - 2008

.
. Edisms - some great ones here
.
* “We knocked the bastard off” – announcing he and Tensing had reached Everest’s summit.
.
* “I like to think that I am a very ordinary New Zealander, not terribly bright perhaps but determined and practical in what I do” – at the 50th anniversary
.
* Nepalese, he said, did not ask for poverty while New Zealanders lived in affluence: “The fact that we do is a blessing, and with it comes responsibilities.”
.
* On becoming a knight: “It was a tremendous honour, of course, but I had never really approved of titles and couldn’t really imagine myself possessing one”
.
* “In some ways I believe I epitomise the average New Zealander. I have modest abilities, I combine these with a good deal of determination and I rather like to succeed.”
.
* To an Indian reporter who asked him if he knew he was seen by many as a god: “Well I know I’m not, so it doesn’t bother me.”
.
atop Everest
.
* From Hillary’s diary, published in his ‘Nothing Venture, Nothing Win’:
“I continued on, cutting steadily and surmounting bump after bump and cornice after cornice looking eagerly for the summit. It seemed impossible to pick it and time was running out. Finally I cut around the back of an extra large hump and then on a tight rope from Tensing I climbed up a gentle snow ridge to its top. Immediately it was obvious that we had reached our objective. It was 11.30a.m. and we were on top of Everest!”
.
He describes the landscape below them and continues: “Tensing and I shook hands and then Tensing threw his arms around my shoulders. It was a great moment! I took off my oxygen and for ten minutes I photographed Tensing holding flags, the various ridges of Everest and the general view. I left a crucifix on top for John Hunt and Tensing made a little hole in the snow and put in it some food offerings - lollies, biscuits and chocolate. We ate Mint Cake and then put our oxygen back on. I was a little worried by the time factor so after 15 minutes on top we turned back at 11.45.”
.
cheers Stuff
